The Montessori ellipse?
The iconic Montessori ellipse. Some represent it by a circle, others by an oblong shape of different lengths without fundamentally changing its principle. At first glance, nothing more than a piece of adhesive tape plated on the ground. However, this ellipse, traced using the gardener's method, brings together a multitude of functions. Here is a non-exhaustive list of its applications.
Work on your concentration
Heels against toes, the child walks on the line. It mobilizes its attention on the execution of this task. This promotes a return to calm.
Work and control your balance
Always executed heels against toes, the youngest children try to keep balance. Larger, we give a hand-held bell. The goal is not to make it ring during the walk.
A benchmark for groupings
Although it is not really an activity, the ellipse also serves as a reference to gather children for group activities, announcements or birthday ceremonies.
Montessori birthdays
We realize Montessori birthdays on the ellipse. We gather the children around the ellipse while the celebrated child walks on the line with a globe in his hands and on the ground, in the ellipse, a candle symbolizing the sun. During this ceremony, we discuss the concept of the passing of time (through photos for example) as well as the meaning of the anniversary and its annual recurrence.
Celestial mechanics
Complementary to birthdays, this line represents the orbital ellipse around the sun. Which also explains why we traced an ellipse.It should be noted that depending on the age, we approach the seasons, the solstices, the equinoxes …
